Duckling Pencil Sketch

I thought I’d start posting a few more unfinished pieces, like sketches and works in progress. I don’t like to document every step of my process like some artists, but I can manage a few snapshots.

I used to do a lot of graphite drawing when I was younger, then drifted away from it for a long time. I’ve always started my colouring pages as pencil sketches on paper, but it’s years since I’ve done any kind of finished work in pencil. But I’ve been wanting to get back into it again, so decided to start off my newest sketchbook with this duckling. This is a freehand drawing from a reference photo. It’s just a rough drawing, but still took a few hours – I’d forgotten just how time-consuming pencil drawing can be!

Anyway, it was fun, and I’m planning a series of realistic animal drawings in graphite, which I’ll post when they’re done. Although at my current speed, that’ll be a while. Hopefully I’ll get faster as I get used to it again 🙂
