I like lots of folk art styles, both to look at and to be inspired by in my own work. There’s something about the flatness and simplified shapes that I find appealing, especially with subjects like animals and plants. This kind of style works well with block print, or faux block print in the case of this floral design, which I drew in Procreate in a block print-inspired style.

It was my entry for Spoonflower’s Floral Block Prints challenge that ran in April last year, and features a stylised flower with a decorative pattern, surrounded by leaves and cute butterflies, in a symmetrical scallop layout. This is one of my favourite pattern layouts too. I went with turquoise blue and white for the contest, but later went a bit nuts making colour variations – over 20!
